Winchester, V.A.
July 4th 1862
My Dear Mary,
I have not rec. a letter
from you since yours of the 17th inst. Endorsing
one from Ella of the 16th inst. I have been
much disappointed by the mails for the
last ten days in not getting a letter from
you. I feel half like scolding you for not
writing oftener. Ella writes a very good letter
now and I think that between you and her you
might afford to write me at least one letter
a week. Ella says Val, is trying to write a letter
to me. I am pleased to hear it, tell Val to keep
trying to send me any letter he writes
however rude the effort. I hope our dear little
boy Brucy has still kept on mending, and is now
able to run about again. I trust that my
good horse Jasper has arrived at home and
this to share the comfort of peace. inst. and friends
denied his master. If he gets well enough to
come back into service again before the
war closes. I must have him, as he suits me
better than any horse I can get. I suppose you
have had a pleasant 4th of July celebration among
the friends and neighbors at home. Oh how I would like
to have been with you, this is my second 4th of July in V.A.
