1 Tullahoma Tenn May 3. 1865
Major
I have the honor (pro forma) (stricken: without
any pleasure) to report as follows. Upon my
arrival here from Nashville on the 22nd inst.
Capt Williams of Maj the staff of the Maj. Genl.
Comdg. the Middle Dist. Tenn (who had come down
in the same train with me) called at my head
quarters & exhibited to me a number of papers of
which the enclosed are copies in part which he kindly
permitted me to take. Also an order endorsed
on the envelope directing him the Capt. to make a thorough (stricken: fully)
investigation of the charges & complaints (stricken: mentioned)
made & contained in said papers against me
by various persons. the most serious of which
were (stricken: contained in) made by Lt. Col. Cliff of the
5th Tenn. Cav. & m Chadd a former
employee in the (stricken: qr Ma) quarter master department
at this post. (stricken: The) I have never shuned
but on the contrary have ever courted the
most thorough investigation into all my
acts office or otherwise as I am well convinced that the
more closely my acts & motives are
scrutinized the more closely it will
appear that I have been activated
alone for the good of my country. But the
novel & uncommon method by which this investiga-
tion has been gotten up & put through has occasio-
ned me much pain. A Lt. Col. of one of the Regts.
