Head Quarters Milroy’s Bgd.
L’Auglais Fairfax Co. Va., 8 miles
West Washington City.
Dear Mary,
I commenced writing you a
long & connected letter several days ago in as
to give you some idea of the terrible fighting &
marching we have pass through since I
last wrote you- but I am so constantly
interrupted by marching orders to attend to
other matters. We have been daily shifting
our position & I did dispare of getting time to
write you fully about the 7 different battles
I have been in. I had hoped to get to finish my
long letter tonight & tomorrow we had some
assurances that the camp we moved to today
would be occupied by us for some time to rest &
reorganize our worn out & cut up troops but I
have just now orders to prepare to march again
I don’t know where. Know how uneasy you would
be I have contrived to drop you a fast line to
say that I am still well, in excellent health.
I love it in the front in all our battles & escaped
death. I don’t know how thousands of times, our
great battles of the 29th & 30th ult. or the old
Bull Run battle ground went most terrible I
lost near 500 men out of my little Bgd. of 2000
