My Dear Mary.
This is Sunday night.
It has been a gloomy day – poring down
rain in torrents almost incessantly. indeed
it has been raining the greater part of the
time for the last two weeks, & the roads
that our poor teams have to drag over are
truly horrible. I confess to feeling the
weakness of homesickness. & would be willing
to pay dearly for the great favor of being at
home with my dear family a while. But there
seems to be an iron necessity that precludes
the possibility of such a favor while my
country is in danger & armed treason is trying
to destroy the best Government on Earth. but
peace, glorious peace & the “soldiers return
will come, till then I must be content with
hearing from home & not seeing the loved ones
there. I frequently receive packages of papers
from you & forget to tell you in my last letter
that I take the daily Indianapolis Journal &
also the daily N.Y. Herald, both of which
I receive regularly & bring the latest news so
my dear remember this in sending me papers. I don’t have
Handwritten; 6 pages, double folded on white stationery with light blue lines
