My Dear Mary
You will probably be
surprised to receive a letter from me at
this place when the last letter I wrote
you was on the eve of starting to Monteray
from Beverly. I will explain all in order.
I went on with my expedition as I stated in
my last letter. I swept with different portions
of my troops through the counties of Pendleton,
Highland, Pocahontas & parts of Augusta &
Bath. My boys had several skirmishes with
gurilla parties. Captured 45 of them including
Majr Harness of the regular reble cavelry
with ten of his men 2 gurilla Capts. &
one Lt. besides what they killed (of which
I took no account) They also got 75 head
of good beef cattle belonging to the reble
army & 23 horses. I had but one man
wounded & one horse killed. the small pox
was raging over in Stanton & in the Country
around & had spread over into Highland & was
more dangerous than 10,000 reble troops –
