My Dear Robert,
I hardly know how to begin
to write you surrounded as you have been
by the thick messengers of death, and so
far as I can learn, have come out unscathed!
The Lord be praised for his kind preservation of
you amid so many who have fallen, and O’ may
you still be preserved for future good, in these
dark, and still darkening, times of our Countrys
History. .I shudder when I think of a bullet
penetrating your vitals, blasting our hope of ever
having you at home again with us. It is
this hope that cheers and keeps us up from
day to day. Our little ones now talk quite
cheerily about Pa’s comeing home, and look
forward with a great deal of pleasure to the
time when Pa will be home, little Brucey
has an idea that he has a Pa some place, and
often goes up to some man, and hangs on him,
and asks “Say-say are you my Pa” There is
a great anxiety here to get the mail and
our children watch for the hack and are
Handwritten; 4 pages, double folded, pencil on white stationery with light blue lines
