My Dear Robert,
I was exceedingly well
pleased last evening when I received a
letter from you, and felt sad after reading
it that you have much cause to feel “blue”
over the condition of our beloved Country. the
people here have long been dissatisfied with the
way the war has been managed, and dont
see why McClellan is kept in so prominent a
position so long, when he accomplishes so
little. McDowell is not liked here, since
it has been known how tender, he is of rebel
property, and if the story is true that Sigel shot
at him for raising a white hankerchief to the
rebels. I think it a great pitty that he did
not kill him, but perhaps his Cup of treason
is not yet full.-
I have just been out lecturing our boys &
F. Martin on smoking, and forbid our boys to
use tobacco in any form. Walter came in and
said Frankie wanted some matches.
