[Poem on a loose page found in Kate Hiestand scrapbook.]
Looking Backward.
When you and I were young my dear
The girls all dressed this way
When they fared out upon the street
To School or work or play.
Five yards of binging it did take
To go around a skirt,
And then we had to hold them up
To keep them from the dirt.
Now, wasn't it an awful thing
To do your neck like this?
They called them chokers and they choked
Many a wretched miss!
This is the way our little waists
Were outlined by a belt
And pinched in by a corset
That sometimes made a welt.
Our clothes were so uncomfortable
We never found life dull,
With our heavy hats perched sideways
Upon our aching skulls.
