SPEEDOMETER
PUBLISHED BI-WEEKLY BY THE LOUISVILLE CEMENT CORPORATION

EMPLOYEES GET NEW BADGES
Attractive new badges bearing the pay number of each employee will soon be distributed to all employees of the Louisville Cement Company. This new badge will serve as an aid in various ways. The chief purpose will be the identification of the employees of the Company in securing tools from tool room, receiving pay envelopes on payday and many other useful ways.
RETIRED AKPER LONG YEARS OF SERVICE
On July 1, 1941 three old employees in the persons of Fred Enders, James Baugh, and Edwin Gladden, Sr. were retired from active service. Fred had completed 36 years of active continuous service with this Company, of which 29 years was spent in the handling of high explosives in the quarry. Fred is very proud of the fact that in all these 29 years not a single man was injured as a result of explosvies at Speed.
James Baugh, better known to his friends as "Jim" had a continuous service record of some 28 years; however he has been connected with the Company at various times as for as far back as 1887.
Edwin Gladden, Sr. who has some 20 years of service with this Company was also retired on July 1, 1941. "Ed" as he was known to his fellow employees has for the past few years worked at the Community House. His early years were spent in the Boiler room at the Portland Plant.
These men have taken an active interest in our accident prevention program at all times. They have a personal safety record which younger employees could use as a goal to attain for themselves. These old timers have the best wishes of those of us who remain to carry on where they left off.
NEW INSURANCE IN FULL SWING
The new group insurance which was put intoeffect on April 10, 1941 at the Speed Plant is now in full swing and a large number of the men have filed claims for sick and accident insurance and hospitalization, both on themselves and on their dependents. On July 1, 1941 more than a thousand dollars had been paid to employees for claims.
NEW DISPENSARY COMPLETED
The new modern dispensary for the care of the injured has been completed and is now ready for use. We are quite proud of these new quarters as few plants of our size can boast of a First Aid room as attractive and completely furnished in all modern equipment as ours.
A visit to this new department, (though we hope it will not be for the care of an injury) will be worth while. Here you will see the latest in Industrial X-Ray equipment for use in locating fractures and broken bones also for chest X-Ray work. For the treatment of sprain and strains you will find the latest in modern diathermy. Dr. Arthur Vandevert will be at the office one hour each day and First Aid will be provided every hour day or night.
STATE HIGHWAY TO BE WIDENED
Word has been received that State Road 31 through Speed will be widened to 36 feet with curb and gutter from the Muddy Fork bridge to the junction of State Road 403.

The newsletter was focused on safety issues at the plant but also included human interest stories. The Speedometer began publication in 1921 and continued through 1929. In 1937, the company created The Warning Star newsletter. It is unclear how many issues of this were produced. The Speedometer came back into publication in July 1941 and continuing publication until July 1955. The newsletter then became known as The Speed Way which was published through 1968. In 1969, the newsletter became the Louisville Cement Magazine which was published quarterly. |
