PVT. WILLIAM GUERNSEY
3RD BOMBARDMENT SQUADRON
FRANCE FIELD
PANAMA CANAL ZONE
DEAR WILLIAM:
NO DOUBT YOU WILL BE SURPRISED TO DECEIVE A LETTER FROM ME. I WAS INTERESTED IN READING YOUR LETTER ADDRESSED TO THE LADIES
BIBLE CLASS AT SELLERSBURG AND PUBLISHED IN THE CLARK COUNTY MIRROR. YOU WILL FIND IT ENCLOSED; I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED
IN SEEING IT.
I AM SENDING YOU TODAY SEVERAL BACK COPIES OF THE SPEEDOMETER AND AM PUTTING YOUR NAME ON THE MAILING LIST FOR FUTURE COPIES. THIS LITTLE PAPER, WHICH COMES OUT EVERY TWO WEEKS, DOES NOT CARRY A LOT OF NEWS BUT SOME OF IT MAY INTEREST YOU. AS YOU WILL SEE, IN EACH ISSUE OF THE SPEEPOMETER I WRITE A LITTLE STORY ABOUT ONE OF OUR MEN IN THE SERVICE. I HOPE TO WRITE A STORY ABOUT YOU IN SOME EARLY ISSUE BUT TO DO SO YOU WILL HAVE TO HELP ME BY SENDING ME THE INFORMATION.
FIRST, I WILL WANT TO KNOW THE DATE YOU ENTERED SERVICE AND HOW- -I DO NOT REMEMBER WHETHER YOU ENLISTED OR WERE DRAFTED. THEN I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN STATIONED AND WITH WHAT OUTFITS YOU HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED. ALSO, WHEN YOU LEFT THE U. S. FOR PANAMA, HOW YOU TRAVELED, AND WHEN YOU ARRIVED, SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOUR PRESENT DUTIES9, AND YOUR IMPRESSION OF THE CANAL ZONE. IN FACT, ANYTHING INTERESTING THAT YOU CAN SEND ME ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCES IN THE SERVICE, BOTH PAST AND
PRESENT, WILL BE WELCOMED.
MANY MORE OF OUR BOYS ARE GOING INTO THE SERVICE. GLEN JOHNSON AND EARL BERRY HAVE ENLISTED IN THE MARINE CORPS. GLEN HAS BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL FOR ABOUT SIX WEEKS WITH AN INFECTED EYE. HE HAD AN OPERATION ON IT LAST WEEK AND IS SETTER NOW. NO PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE EYESIGHT IS EXPECTED. EARL CRUM HAS ALSO GONE INTO THE MARINE CORPS.
