Public Meeting
Focuses on Vitality
of Downtown
Twenty- seven residentsof the
Greentown area gathered at the
Public Library November 14 in
response to , a notice of Public
Meeting called by Greentown
Main Street Association, Inc. Led
by consultant Jane Howey and
Association president, Don
Flook, participants discussed
present and future aspects of
the town.
A small- group format was
utilized to first discuss what is
liked about Greentown. Each
group then reported back to the
group at large and the
responses were recorded. The
most frequently mentioned
attribute of Greentown was the
good mix of businesses
including financial institutions,
post office, library and medical
offices.
Also mentioned by several as
what they like about Greentown
were that it is safe, clean, has
good schools, many churches,
the 4- H Fair and the Glass
Museum. Other qualities, not in
any particular order, were
family values, ease of travel in
and out of town, active
volunteer groups, fire and
ambulance service, and a " just
right" size of the town.
WISHES AND DREAMS
The second question put to
the small groups was, " If you
could change one thing about
downtown Greentown, what
would you change?"
The number one wish seems to
be visual improvement to some
building facades. Removing the
overhead electrical wires and
providing more parking were
also popular ideas. Other
suggestions were for sidewalk
improvement, landscaping,
attractive signs, and a park.
Out of general discussion
came an agreement that there is
a need to market the businesses
and that a. Welcome to Greentown
committee is needed.
THENEXTSTEP
Howey stated that, " In the
next few months the Main Street
board will be developing their
goals. They want to reftetrt the
opinion of the community in
their actions."
Flookinvited all those present
to sign up for any of the four
Main S t r e e t committees,
Promotion, Design, Economic
r e s t r u c t u r i n g , a n d
Organization. The Main Street
Association normally meets the
fourth Thursday evening in the
City Building. There may not be
a meeting in December, however.
Mary Miller of Greentown True
Value Hardware added some
humor to the evening by
bringing a catalog from which
pink flamingos could be
ordered. This was in response
to last month's Grapevine
article about this meeting.
Birthday Surprise for Hill
Eastern School Corp. Superintendent Lindan Hill was totally
surprised by the students and staff of the Junior/ Senior High
School Friday, November 22. Hill, whose 50th birthday was
November 23, was greeted in the gymnasium on Friday by pupils
who sang " Happy Birthday" and presented him with a banner
signed by students and staff. He blew out the 50 candles on a cake
and later, along with some family and school board members, was
treated to an elegant luncheon prepared by the home economics
depaitment. ( So far as we know, everyone refrained from the
obvious " Over the HILL" jokes.)

The Greentown Sesquicentennial
Committee is sponsoring, compiling
and publishing a " 1 50th Anniversary
Book of Greentown". This will
include a history of Greentown and
Liberty, Union, and Jackson
Townships. It will also include the
histories of schools, churches,
clubs, organizations, and
businesses.
This book will be personal too,
because the genealogy of Eastern
Howard County residents will be
recorded. If you are now living or
have lived in Eastern Howard
Gounty, we invite you in INCLUDE
YOUR FAMILY BIOGRAPHY in our
book. This history is for ail residents
- former or current.
HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO
DO ...
Send a typed copy, if possible, of
your family history in 500 words or
less. ( There will be a charge of
$ 0.15 per word for any history over
500 words.) Give- the date your
family came to the county, from what
state or county they originated, and
their vocation before and after their
arrival. You should include
interesting stories, marriages,
children, jobs, education, and
organizations. Your biography
should be in third person ( he, she,
they). Include your name and
address. One family biography per
household, please.

If you want your family picture
included, there will be a $ 12.00
charge per picture. Please send
one photo ( current or historic) with
your family biography. Send a
professional copy ( no Xerox copies,
please) of any irreplaceable photo.
Indicate the names of people, date,
and captions on the baek.
You may send other historical
photos that relate to the history of
the Greentown area for possible

The program included a

' ledge of Allegiance and

grade, readings by Zach Bagley,
Inna Rethlake, Thomas Stanley

reterans were introduced.
The program concluded with a
noment of silence, playing of
' aps and Amazing Grace, after
vhich the colors were retired
ind all filed out quietly. The
wogram was coordinated by ,
' aul Nicholson.
