a paddle race at last year's Pump Fest. The object of the game is to be the first
to reach the finish line without spilling the water from a cup balanced on a canoe

The Greentown Pump Fest was
inspired by memories of the Town
Pump, which once stood on the
northwest comer of the intersection of
Main and Meridian Streets. It provided
a cool drink on a warm day, an object of
play for children, and a meeting place.
That pump is no longer there.
Pump Fest Chairman, Rachel Jenkins,
says, " Pumps represent days when we
were all tied to the land, aa time of
supplying many of our own needs, a
time of makmg our own recreation, and
a time of neighborliness."
Pumps also exhibit their own form of
artistry. A study of many pumps will
reveal a great variety of shapes, usually
with graceful curves and offen with
embellishments created by the designer
who went beyond the basic necessity of
form. We find them today, sometimes
in their original location, sometimes in a
spot chosen for aesthetics only. They
are often honored by being surrounded
by flowers and other forms of
decoration.
" Let's Meet at the Pump"
In the event of rain, the fest will be at
the fairgrounds.
