" Skate board"
Ordinance Tabled
An ordinance regulating the use of
bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, in-line
skates, and scooters was brought
up for second reading at the Greentown
Town Council May 1, 2001. Mike
Sheridan, 704 E. Walnut St., spoke in
support of the OrdinanGe stating that
downtown businesses and elderly
residents will appreciate it. Paula
Jensen, 312 S. Meridian St., spoke in
objection to it saying it will endanger
children. She said children will either
ride in the street or cross at a point
other than the stoplight in order to
comply with the ordinance. Elaine
Maddox, 411 E. Lincoln, said she
concurs with Paula. Marshal Jeff
Bennett said he sees the ordinance as a
tool which parents and law
enforcement personnel can use to
educate about safety. Council
President Roger Wolfe said the
ordinance became necessary because of
a few discourteous riders and that the
Town has no authority presently to stop
them.
The proposed ordinance prohibits the
operation of any of the named wheeled
vehicles on the sidewalks one block
each way fiom the intersection of Main
and Meridian Streets. It also addresses
the manner of riding and parking.
Discussion in the meeting made it clear
that the vehicles may be carried or
walked in the four- block section
downtown.
Action on the ordinance was tabled
until amendments can be made. The
next Town Council meeting will be
June 5, 7: 30 p. m. at the Town Hall.
In other action, the Council voted to
reduce the sewage charge to Hugh
Wyrick for the new car wash for the
first year of use.

Healv is New Eastern School Superintendent rl
The Eastern Howard School Board
extended Dr. Stephen C. Healy a three-year
contract as Superintendent of
Schools in a unaniinous vote on May
17. The special meeting was held in
the Eastern Howard Performing Arts
Center. Dr. Healy accepted the offer
and publicly signed the contract.
Board President, Bill Heck, said in a
prepared statement, " All fifteen
applicants for this position exhibited
extensive professional preparation and
experience, as well as dedicated
commitment to public education. The
Board's selection of Dr. Healy from
such an array of outstanding candidates
signals our belief that the professional
qualities and positive personal
attributes he will bring to this job were
withqut equal. For that reason, we are
zxtremely pleased by his acceptance of
3ur offer and eagerly look forward to
3ur work together as Dr. Healy leads in
3ur continuing efforts to improve the
leaching and learning process within
Eastern Howard School Corporation in
: he years ahead."
Healy is well known to many Eastern
patrons, having served as Elementary
Principal from 1986 to 1993 and High
School Principal from 1993 to 1995.
He left Eastern to accept the position of
Superintendent of Oak Hill Schools
Dr. Stephen Healy
and then was Superintendent of
Kokomo Center Schools.
Dr. Healy states that one of the first
things he will do when starting work
the first of July will be to review the
budget. July is the month budget work
is done in all school corporations. Dr.
Lindan Hill, who is retiring, will still be
in the office the month of July. Healy
says Hill aid Business Manager, Verna
Rush, will have already worked on next
year's budget but he will want to review
it with them and be certain of full
understanding.
Another task to be addressed as soon
as he takes office is to take steps to fill
the position of Assistant Elementary
Principal. That vacancy was made
known at the May 22 Board meeting,
with the resignation of Doug DuPouy,
who is to be an Elementary Principal at
Hamilton Heights.
Dr. Healy describes his leadership.
style as being people- orientated. He
says he learns a lot by reading and
studying programs but he finds he
learns the most by listening to people.
He says he has his own ideas on many
subjects but is open to hearing other
opinions. He wants to understand
others' objectives and goals and to
share his with them.
On a personal note, he states that
when he was last at Eastern he
considered himself a young man. Now
he is a grandfather. He came to Eastern
after returning to $ the United States
from Saudi Arabia and was longer at
Eastern than any other position he has
held. He say he holds a lot of good
feelings for the Eastern community.
His contract with Eastern has a base
salary of $ 90,000 with a vehicle
allowance of $ 6,000. His base contract
with Kokomo for the 2000- 2001 school
year was $ 92,075. Dr. Hill's tinal
contract with the Corporation was for
base salary, $ 92,250 with a $ 5.740
vehicle allowance.
