" Skate board" Ordinance Tabled An ordinance regulating the use of bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, in-line skates, and scooters was brought up for second reading at the Greentown Town Council May 1, 2001. Mike Sheridan, 704 E. Walnut St., spoke in support of the OrdinanGe stating that downtown businesses and elderly residents will appreciate it. Paula Jensen, 312 S. Meridian St., spoke in objection to it saying it will endanger children. She said children will either ride in the street or cross at a point other than the stoplight in order to comply with the ordinance. Elaine Maddox, 411 E. Lincoln, said she concurs with Paula. Marshal Jeff Bennett said he sees the ordinance as a tool which parents and law enforcement personnel can use to educate about safety. Council President Roger Wolfe said the ordinance became necessary because of a few discourteous riders and that the Town has no authority presently to stop them. The proposed ordinance prohibits the operation of any of the named wheeled vehicles on the sidewalks one block each way fiom the intersection of Main and Meridian Streets. It also addresses the manner of riding and parking. Discussion in the meeting made it clear that the vehicles may be carried or walked in the four- block section downtown. Action on the ordinance was tabled until amendments can be made. The next Town Council meeting will be June 5, 7: 30 p. m. at the Town Hall. In other action, the Council voted to reduce the sewage charge to Hugh Wyrick for the new car wash for the first year of use. Peter. Heck Hired 1997 Eastern High Graduate, Peter Heck, will be back at Eastern, this time . as an instructor. He has been hired by the School Board to teach High School Social Studies. He has a teaching degree from Indiana Wesleyan with a Social Studies major. Also hired was Joyce Fruth as Family and Consumer Science teacher. She has a degree in Home Economics with a vocational license. She has been teaching at Kokomo High School since 1993. Memorial Day Traditions Placing flags and flowers is a way of remembering and paying homage to the departed. Greenlawn Cemetery, Greentown, was filled with activity Saturday, May 26, as many people were busy decorating graves. Wanda McBee places flowers on the grave of her husband, Randall. Symons American Legion Post # 3 17, were among those who placed flags on - -_- ,. _--_-. the graves of veterans. ~ ._... - Healv is New Eastern School Superintendent rl The Eastern Howard School Board extended Dr. Stephen C. Healy a three-year contract as Superintendent of Schools in a unaniinous vote on May 17. The special meeting was held in the Eastern Howard Performing Arts Center. Dr. Healy accepted the offer and publicly signed the contract. Board President, Bill Heck, said in a prepared statement, " All fifteen applicants for this position exhibited extensive professional preparation and experience, as well as dedicated commitment to public education. The Board's selection of Dr. Healy from such an array of outstanding candidates signals our belief that the professional qualities and positive personal attributes he will bring to this job were withqut equal. For that reason, we are zxtremely pleased by his acceptance of 3ur offer and eagerly look forward to 3ur work together as Dr. Healy leads in 3ur continuing efforts to improve the leaching and learning process within Eastern Howard School Corporation in : he years ahead." Healy is well known to many Eastern patrons, having served as Elementary Principal from 1986 to 1993 and High School Principal from 1993 to 1995. He left Eastern to accept the position of Superintendent of Oak Hill Schools Dr. Stephen Healy and then was Superintendent of Kokomo Center Schools. Dr. Healy states that one of the first things he will do when starting work the first of July will be to review the budget. July is the month budget work is done in all school corporations. Dr. Lindan Hill, who is retiring, will still be in the office the month of July. Healy says Hill aid Business Manager, Verna Rush, will have already worked on next year's budget but he will want to review it with them and be certain of full understanding. Another task to be addressed as soon as he takes office is to take steps to fill the position of Assistant Elementary Principal. That vacancy was made known at the May 22 Board meeting, with the resignation of Doug DuPouy, who is to be an Elementary Principal at Hamilton Heights. Dr. Healy describes his leadership. style as being people- orientated. He says he learns a lot by reading and studying programs but he finds he learns the most by listening to people. He says he has his own ideas on many subjects but is open to hearing other opinions. He wants to understand others' objectives and goals and to share his with them. On a personal note, he states that when he was last at Eastern he considered himself a young man. Now he is a grandfather. He came to Eastern after returning to $ the United States from Saudi Arabia and was longer at Eastern than any other position he has held. He say he holds a lot of good feelings for the Eastern community. His contract with Eastern has a base salary of $ 90,000 with a vehicle allowance of $ 6,000. His base contract with Kokomo for the 2000- 2001 school year was $ 92,075. Dr. Hill's tinal contract with the Corporation was for base salary, $ 92,250 with a $ 5.740 vehicle allowance.
