June 22 with Eastern’s first team State Championship. The celebration had continued since the 1- 0, 12 inning marathon victory over Tecumseh at Hamilton Southeastern’s softbal I complex in the final game of the state softball tournament. Wearingthe State Champion medals and celebrating with the Greentown fans was a fantastic way to wrap up the 2003 season. Although everyone was tired from tlie long day, nobody really wanted to go home. It was an exciting experience for a great team of outstanding players with the following seniors completing their Eastern softball careers: Kasee S pang I e r, E i ken berry , Stephanie Maish, Ashleigh Maher and Brooke Harden. The Lady Comets followed up on a regular season of 24 wins, 4 losses, and an MIC conference championship by winning a second season of 7 straight victories, thus making them the State Champions. This included a tough Sectional at Greentown with wins over Taylor 3- 0, Wabash 11- 1 and Northfield 2- 1. Kasee Spangler Van e s sa led the way in the sectional wins with key 6th inning hits in both the Taylor and Northfield games. This included her first career home run against Northfield in the final game. The following weekend brought the tough Shenandoah and Clinton Prairie teams to Greentown for tlie Regional. Eastern pitchers Spangler and Howell threw a 2 hit shut out for a 2- 0 win against Shenandoah. The Regional championship game was against the Clinton Prairie Lady Gophers who defeated Eastern in 2002 and were the defending State Champions with all their players returning. Again, great pitching and defense kept the Gophers shut down and tlie Lady Comets once again got a run from a Jenny Johnson single, a Cayleigh Harvey sacrifice bunt and a Breanna Howell single in the 3rd inning. Clinton Prairie rallied in the 6th inning with a single and a double, but the defense and Howell shut down their last effort for an Eastern Regional Championship. The following Friday, the Lady Comet team bus and fan caravan, escorted part way by the Greentown volunteer fire department, traveled to Hamilton Southeastern only to be met in the parking lot by an official with bad news- postponed by rain until Saturday. That resulted in another night of anxious waiting and another caravan Saturday morning, only to run into another rain delay of our first game with Whiting from 1 : 00 until 3: 00 PM. Thanks to the Brad and Tammy Howell motor home we had somewhere to “ relax” until the game. The game with Whiting finally began after all the delays, Whiting threatened to score with ? hits in the first inning, but we escaped with a strong pitching sljut down by Spangler. Breaniia Howell then came to bat in the 3rd inning after singles by Jenny Johnson and Cayleigh Harvey. Breanna fouled off 5- 6 pitches after getting a 2 strike count then hit a 2 out homerun to Peter Heck in the left field bleachers for a 3- 0 lead. That was enough scoring as Howell did not allow another base runner for Whiting the rest of the game. Next was the cli, ampionship game against a very good Tecumseh team from near Evansville and another outstanding pitcher, Jackie Miller. The Lady Comets had only ninety minutes rest due to the late start of their first game. The game was a classic of tough pitching and defense by both teams resulting in a scoreless tie after 1 1 innings. The Lady Comets had tried everything to score including having both Cayleigh Harvey and continued on page 4 Greentown Elections to be November 4 Filing Deadline August 1 Voters of Greentown may have an opportunity to elect five council members and a clerk- treasurer on November 4.
