its spirit will be present on September

Annual Pump Fest. Tlie town pump
provided a cool drink on a warm day,
an object of play for children atid a
meeting place for young and old.
Some working pumps remain and
many others are used as yard
decoration. They remind us of days
wlien we were inore closely tied to the
land, a time of family self- sufficiency,
a time of making our own recreation,
and a time of neighborliness. Pumps
also. ex1iibit tlieir own form of ai- iistry.
A study of pumps will reveal a great
variety of shapes, usually with graceful
curves. They are often honored by
being surrounded by flowers and other
forms of decoration.

feature entertainment, food, and booths
with various items for sale. Tlie Fest
\ vi11 be held from 9: OO a. m. to 5: OO
p. m. on I\ lorth. Meridian Street. I n case
of inclement weather. it will be in a
building at the fairgrounds.
‘ ‘ ~ U t d Dclivcry” will be on hand w- it11
traditional folk tales and legends of
literature. They also will provide old-time
folk renditions in song from many
time periods.
Ryan Demler will return with his
magic act including birds. He will be
on stage at noon.
“ A Sure Thing” contemporary
Christian band from Wabash, will be
on stage begintiing at 1 : 30.

Indiana Civil War Reenactors will
return. They are eager to tell of tlie
soldier’s life during tlie Civil War and
to demonstrate drills.
Canoe Nature Trips will be offered
three times during the day, sponsored
by tlie Wildcat Guardatis. These free
trips depart from tlie batik of tlie
Wildcat west of the EHS softball
diamond.
A Street Chalk Art Contest will turn
a section of tlie street into a patchwork
of color as artists show tlieir creativity
on the street surface. Spaces 3 ft. x 3
ft. will be marked off. Pre- registration
is not required for this free event. Art
work may be begin at 1O: OO a. m. and
must be finished by 3: OO p. m. Prizes
will he awarded for Most Creative,
Most Patriotic, atid Best Pump Theme.
Chalk will be provided or yoit may
bring your own. Work alone, with a
partner, or as a group.
The Pie Baking Contest will
determine tlie best Pump Fest pies; and
tlie Pump Decorating “ Contest will
find tlie best decorated pump. See
page 10 for particulars on both
contests. A Watermelon Seed
Spitting Contest will be held in front
of tlie stage at 3: OO.
Other activities available are a duck
derby, roping a steer head. and paddle
race. There will be craft and flea
booths.’ Tlie Greentown Volunteer
Fire Co. will have a display.
Tlie Pump, Fest is sponsored by
Greentown Main Street Association.

County 4- H Fairgrounds, on the north
side of Greentown.

Select Two for Ballot
Members of tlie Democrat party met
in convention on August 18 in
Greentown City Hall to decide
between two Democrats who filed for
Town Council from Ward 2.
Convention Chairman, Bob Myers,
was assisted by Bob Armstrong and
Don Flook. Joyce Higginbottoin
received eight votes to Brad Chaplin‘ s
five. As there are no Republicans on
tlie ballot from that ward,
Higginbottom will be on tlie Council
beginning in January 2004.

Delphi. Slie lias lived in Greentown
for twenty- eight years. Slie states that
six generations of lier family have
called Greentown home and now lier
children and grandchildren. Slie lias
been married to lier husband Roger for
thirty- six years arid lias three children,

Tlie Republican party held a
convention on August 19, also in City
Hall. The choice from Ward 4 was
between three candidates, Scott Deyoe,
Mary Lindgren, and Aaron Silane.
Convention Chairman,, Larry Hinesley,
directed the procedure with tlie
assistance of Barbara Middleton and
Sliirley ilarper. Hinesley reminded all
present that “ This is a small town so
no matter how it goes tonight, u. e‘ re
all i; eighbors.“ On the third ballot
Mary Lindgren was chosen with a Lote
of sixteen to Deyoe‘ s twelve, Sliane’s
name was dropped after the second
ballot, according to the rules
announced at tlie beginning of tlie
session by Hinesley. As there are no
Democrats running from Ward 4, Mary
will take a seat on the Council in
January 2004.
Mary works at Delphi. Originally
from Chicago, she and lier husband
Tim and daugliters Meredith and
Racheal moved to Greentown from
Kokomo two years ago for the- school
system and community. She is a
graduate ofthe University of Illinois in
political science with an elnpliasis on
pre- law.

Lindgren, incumbents James Harris
and Craig Trott are unopposed, as is
ClerWTreasurer, Barbara Middleton.
The rgmaining seat on tlie Town
Council will be decided by ‘ voters on
November 4. , Both Dem. Joseph
Buckley and Rep. Todd Everting have
filed from Ward 3.
All registered voters from within the
corporate limits 4of Greentown may
vote for all seats, regardless of tlie
ward in which they live. Town
election will be held in City Hall.
