NASA Engineers New Sidewalks Being Installed

Steve Hall and Dean Schaaf
A reception was quickly planned
when it was learned that two Eastern
High graduates who have worked for
NASA were going to be in Greentown
on the same date. The reception was
held in the Greentown History Center
on Sunday, March 21. Over forty
guests greeted Steve Hall and Dean
Schaaf. Steve lives in Huntsville,
Alabama. He retired in 2002 after
thirty- four years with NASA. With a
degree from Purdue University in
Astronautical Engineering, he worked
on many projects, including the Moon
Buggy, Skylab, Hubble Telescope, and
Large Space Structure Assembly.
Dean currently is based at Kennedy
Space Center in Florida. After a
twenty- six year career with the Navy,
during which he earned a degree in

Electrical Engineering from Purdue, he
went to work at NASA as a Ground
Operations Manager. He manages the
convoy of vehicles and 250 personnel
who respond to an orbiter landing. He
was involved in the recovery and
reconstruction effort following the
Columbia disaster. He presently is
working on Return to Flight issues.
An exhibit featuring Steve, Dean,
Webb Marner, Jim Long, Tim
Johnson, and Reuben ( Hochstedler)
Alexander, all graduates of Eastern
High with connections to NASA, is
currently at the Greentown History
Center, 103 E. Main St. The exhibit
may be seen on Saturdays and Sundays
from 1- 4 p. m. through May or by
appointment. Call 765- 628- 3800 and
leave a message.
Progress Being Made
Toward Parks & Trails
In 2003, four students in Purdue
University’s Landscape Architecture
class created a parks and trails plan for
Greentown. Greentown Main Street’s
Parks and Trails Committee has since
been working to implement the plan in
various sites throughout the
community. The committee is now
seeking funding to create a portion of
the trail system within the plan.
As part of the application for funds,
a public meeting is required. ( See
notice on page 3.) Parks and Trails
committee chairman, Joiene Rule,
encourages everyone wanting to. see
the development of parks and trails in
Greentown to attend the meeting. It
will be Wednesday, April 21; 7: OO
p. m. at the Greentown Library
Community Room.
