First Female Firefighter
History was made recently when the
Greentown Volunteer Fire Company
added the first female firefighter since
the founding of the company in 1944.
Cami Hensler, 19, took EMT training
in the fall of 2003 at the same time her
father, Gregg, took the class. The six-month-

meetings per week of three hours each
for a total of one hundred and forty-four
hours plus sixteen hours of
clinicals. Cami passed the course and
was certified March 2004.
Gregg has been a firefightedEMT
for nine years, seven of those being in
Lancaster, Penn. He took the EMT
class for re- certification, required after
moving back to Indiana. ( Gregg is an
Eastern graduate.) Cami took the class
because “ I like the idea of helping.
w
I’ve always had a passion for people.”
After becoming certified as an EMT,
Cami took the twenty- four hours of
training mandated by the state to
become a firefighter. She will
continue her training in firefighting.
She said at first she thought she would
concentrate on EMT work, but now
that she has taken firefighting training,
she has “ a real interest” in firefighting.
Fire Chief, Vince Jaenicke, said,
“ Cami is an asset to the company. She
is willing to do what is required and is
a team player.”
Cami works at a daycare at
Crossroads Community Church. She
is one of five new firefighters in the
Greentown Company this year. The
others are Jason Davis, Jason Grider,
