Fountain to Be Replaced
In a few months the area in front of
City Hall should look quite different
than it does today. The Town Council
accepted a proposal by Russell Design
for a new “ fountain courtyard”.
The project will be the culmination
of work by a Fountain Committee,
chaired by Jolene Rule. The
committee first heard ideas on what
features should be included in a
fountain and the area around it.
Russell Design . was asked to present
some plans to the committee
incorporating the features of a fountain
with minimum maintenance
requirements, some plantings, seating,
accessibility, a set- back from the alley,
and loss of a minimum number of
parking spaces.
The centerpiece will be a fountain
with a dolphin patterned after the well-known
Greentown Glass dolphin. It
will be carved of limestone and treated
with water seal. Dwight Schaaf, who
will be doing the masonry on the
project, will put a mosaic of
Greentown Glass in the bottom of the
fountain. On either side of the
fountain will be planters for flowers.
Low walls will set off the main area.
These walls will be protected from
traffic by pilons. The floor will be .
. brick. A United States and an Indiana
State flag will be on the ijorth end of
the plaza.
The new fountain will replace the
current fountain, flower boxes, and
walls which were installed as
Greentown’s U. S. Bicentennial
project. The current fountain has been
replaced twice and the walls were
needing repair. The fountain has been
the subject of different opinions, with
some wanting it removed completely
and others wanting repair.

The Council was unanimous in their
approval of the new design. The total
project is priced at $ 46,304.00 and will
be paid out of Economic Development
Income Tax funds.
