The Director’s view from the new band tower
Eastern Band Tower
a Big Help to School
The Eastern High School band tower
was built in the summer of 2004 for
the purpose of making the north side of
the student parking lot the primary
rehearsal facility for the Eastern High
School marching band. The band
tower sits about 15 feet off the north
side of the parking lot and allows the
marching band staff to view the band
rehearsals from the necessary angle
needed to clean the musical and visual
performance.
For many years previous, the
marching band’s primary rehearsal
facility was the football stadium. For
each morning and evening rehearsal,
the band and guard would walk over
the football field and rehearse on the
grass.
In the spring of 2004, the school
corporation approved plans to renovate
the football stadium for the following
fall. Part ofthese renovations included
the installation of an automatic
sprinkler system into the football field
itself. This sprinkler system would be
set to automatically water the football
field every morning at 5 A. M. This
watering of the field would
dramatically improve the field’s
appearance, but would also make the
ground too soft for the band to march

Stephen C. Healy, asked Director of
Band, Peter Sampson, what could be
done to make the parking lot a more
suitable and permanent rehearsal
facility. The answer was that a band
tower was needed in order to be able to
maintain a high enough vantage point
for rehearsal. The band would still be
able to use the football field for their
weekly Wednesday evening rehearsals,
but not in the morning during class
time.
After many different designs and
bids were reviewed, the current band
tower plan was approved by the school
board in the early summer. The tower
was completed in mid- August.
“ The band tower is a great rehearsal
facility for the band staff to be able to
truly see how we can improve the
band’s performance each week”, says
Director of Bands, Peter Sampson.
“ The ability to store some of our
equipment close to the rehearsal field
has also saved us a lot of time each
morning.”
Sampson adds, “ The Eastern High
School marching band is proud to be
one the school’s most honored
activities. The marching band is
