Tornado Warning Sirens
Prove Effective
The outdoor warning sirens,
put into service in June of this
year, were activated the evening
of July 26 about 8: 15 when a
tornado warning was issued for
several counties, including
Howard. Even though not
guaranteed to be ’ heard from
inside buildings, many residents
did hear them from inside, and
with windows closed. The
distance they can be heard is
also impressive. Dwight and
Ganiece Schaaf, 7 128 E 300 N,
heard the sirens.
In this instance the value of
sirens was noted because there
were none of the usual warning
conditions in the sky. The air
was calm and no “ wall cloud”
was visible. If a person did not
have a radio or television on, he
wouldn’t have had reason to be
concerned. But upon listening
to news broadcasts, the
potential danger was confirmed.
In this instance Greentown did
not suffer damage, but a
tornado touchdown was
reported on north 3 1 near road
218.
The sirens will continue to be
tested each - Friday at 1 : 00 p. m.
from March through September.
During the months of October
through February, they will be
tested on the first Friday at 1 : 00
p. m. In the event of pending
severe weather, the test will be
suspended until the next Friday.
Lawn chairs are recommended.
In case of inclement weather,
the program will be at Meridian
Street Christian Church, one
block north of the stoolkht.
School Board
Officers Elected
An election of officers was
held on July 7, 2005 at the
Eastern Howard School
Corporation board meeting.
The new officers are: Bill
Heck, President; Paul Hubbard,
Vice- president; and Larry
Hinesley, Secretary. Other
members are Mark Lantz and
Marietta McWhorter.
Further postions are: Teresa
Vester, Corporation Treasurer;
Jennifer Smith, Deputy
Treasurer; Dana Brovont,
Elementary Extra- Curricular
Treasurer; Debbie Lavengood.
Jr./ Sr. High School Extra-
Curricular Treasurer; and Mark
McCann, Corporation Attorney.
Member Chosen

Marietta McWhorter of
Greentown was picked as a
replacement for Rex White at a
special meqting July 27, 2005.
White resigned because of
moving out of the area.
McWhorter applied and
interviewed alongside 7 other
candidates including Ms. Janet
S. Middlesworth, Mr. Vincent
L. Jaenicke, Sr., Mr. Timothy
Porter, Mr. Brian Dobbert, Mr.
Jefrey L. Buckely, Mr. Terry
Steiner and Mr. Randy
Blankenship, Sr. The School
Board members commented
that the high level of expertise
and excellent credentials of all
the applicants had made it a
very difficult selection process
and that they were grateful for
all the applicants’ willingness
to participate.
McWhorter, employed at
Delphi Finance as a supervisor
responsible for worldwide
balance sheet and cash flow
reporting, achieved her Masters
in Business Administration
from Ball State University
where she also attained a
Bachelor of Arts and Corporate
Finance.
Having grown up in Beach
Grove, Indiana, she moved to
the Greentown area three years
ago. McWhorter’s daughter
enters grade 3 this fall at
Eastern. McWhorter has
recently decided to learn the
violin along with her daughter
and she also enjoys hobbies
such as reading, crafts and
scrapbooking. They attend First
United Methodist Church in
town and like it very much.
Marietta McWhorter
In a time when the single
most pressing issue for our
school board is the decling in
school funding and exorbitant
budget cuts, McWhorter faces
the daunting task of helping to
find new and creative ways to
do more with less. When
asked of her reasons to apply
for the job she said “ Education
is very important and an area
that I feel I could make a
positive contribution to the
community. I had thought
about running for the school
board in the next election and
this is a way to see if I like it.”
When asked what it is she
would bring to the board she
replied “ My background in
corporate finance and my
analytical mind can help me
make good o b j e c t i v e
decisions.”
