Four Vie for
School Board Seat
Larry Hinesley stands
unopposed for the Eastern
school board seat from the
Town of Greentown. However,
voters will be choosing the “ at
large” seat from four
contenders on May 2. They are
Randy Blankenship, Terry R.
Steiner, Dale Smith, and Joyce
Hendrix. We include some
basic information on each in
this issue. Each candidate will
be invited to submit answers to
a few questions for publication
in the April Grapevine. We
will accept questions from the
public until March 13.

Randy Blankenship, 663
South 800 East, Greentown is a
graduate of Eastern High
School 1981. He has a
Bachelor’s Degree in
Ministerial Studies from
Southeastern University,
Lakeland, Florida and did
Graduate Studies at Assemblies
of God Theological Seminary,
Springfield, Missouri. He is
presently Lead Pastor at New
Life Church, Kokomo. His
family includes wife Sharon
and children Anna, a freshman

Terry R. Steiner, 321 South
Howard Street, Greentown, is a
graduate of Western High
School. He has a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Education
from Taylor University and
Master of Arts Degree in
Education from Ball State
University. He is presently
employed at Daimler Chrysler
Kokomo Transmission Plant,
Kokomo. He also is a Licensed
Insurance Agent and works at
Bill Rayls Insurance Agency,
Kokomo. His family includes
wife Joyce and three children,
graduates of Eastern High
School, who are all college
graduates working in their
fields of study.
Dale Smith, 1397 S 1038 E,
Greentown earned a Bachelor
of Science, Electrical
Engineering Technology from
Purdue University in 1986. He
is presently Quality Investigator
at Roche Diagnostics
Corporation. His family
includes wife Stacy and
children Riley, 5th grade; Ross,
31d grade; and Logan,
Kindergarten.
Joyce Hendrix, 3349 S I 100 E,
Greentown has a Bachelor of
Social Work from Ball State
University. She is presently a
homemaker. Her family
includes husband Jeff and
children Taylor, 6th grade; and
Grant, 2” d grade.

Swimmers’ Hair ...
Fad or Function?

If you’ve walked around
the halls at Eastern High
School this past month, you
may have noticed several
unusual hairstyles on some of
the boys. They were unusual
even by today’s teenager’s
standards. You may have even
noticed them around town and
wondered what is going on
with today’s youth.
However, there’s a simple
explanation. These boys
belong to the swim team and
were participating in an annual
team building event that led up
to the sectionals on the
weekend of February 17.
Coach Jeff Glick said that a
few years ago, the boys
decided to bleach their hair the
week before sectionals as a
way to help build ‘ up their
excitement. It also has the
added benefit of reminding
everyone around that
sectionals are coming up.
The swim team has a three
month long season and in the
few weeks before sectionals
start, they start tapering back
on the yardage they swim,
enjoy a special diet and shave
their legs as a way to start
building up for the sectionals.
A week before, they add
bleaching their hair wild colors
to the list. Natural brunettes
and red heads now sport bright
blond hair, or bright red hair
and sometimes, as in the case
with sophomore Derek
Klepfer, bright blond hair with
blue streaks. Some of the boys
even sport outrageously high
Mohawks. Coach Glick said,
“ It’s a chance for the boys to
let loose.” Then the day
before the sectionals, the boys
shave their heads completely.
According to Coach Glick,
Eastern has. a young swim
team this year, consisting
mostly of freshmen and
sophomores with a smaller
amount of juniors and seniors.
In sectionals this year, he
expected the team members to
concentrate on getting their
personal best times, rather than
trying to win against the older,
more experienced teams. He
was rewarded in that desire
this season on Thursday as 25
out of 27 boys established
their best personal times and
on Friday 10 out of 10
swimmers did the same.
Derek Klepfer, a sophomore,
broke Eastern’s school record
for the 500 yard freestyle by
10 seconds.
Coach Glick seemed very
proud of his team this year and
commented that they would be
a very good team for the next
few years as the younger
swimmers have time to
continue to get better times.
He said, “ The future looks
bright for this team.”
