H igg in bottom First
Woman Council
President
Veteran Councilman, Jim
Harris, Ward 1, graciously
handed the gavel to newly
elected President, Joyce
Higginbottom, Ward 2, at the
council’s organizational
meeting in January. This
makes Greentown history by
electing the first woman
Council President.
Todd Everling, Ward 5, was
elected Vice President. The
new leaders took over their
r e s p e c t i v e p o s i t i o n s
immediately. Jim Harris
thanked Mrs. Higginbottom
and Todd Everling for
stepping forward to lead the
council this year. Other
council members are Craig
Trott, Ward 3, and Mary
Lindgren, Ward 4.
Other appointments were
made at the meeting for the
Plan Commission and Board
of Zoning Appeals. The Plan
Commission elected Gary
Lacy as Chairman, Dan
Adams as Vice Chairman, and
Scott Flick as Secretary. Garry
Hill was re- appointed
Administrator. Other
members o f t h e Plan
Commission are Don Downs,
Craig Trott, Todd Everling,
and Mary Lindgren.
The Board of Zoning
Appeals elected Mike
Sheridan, Chairman; Tom
Harper, Vice Chairman; and
Dan Adams, Secretary. Other
members are Brad Chaplin
and Don Downs.
Roger Higginbottom was
appointed the representative to
Howard County Emergency
Management and Joyce
Higginbottom will serve on
the Board of Directors of the
Howard County Solid Waste
D i s t r i c t a n d i s t h e
representative to the Glass
Museum.
Town Engineer is M. D.
Wessler and Associates; Town
Attorney is Corbin King.

Greentown
Election 2007
We mistakenly reported last
month the dates for filing for
Greentown Town Council and
clerk- treasurer positions and
that there will be town primary
elections. That is an error and
we regret any inconvenience to
anyone.
Elections are held every 4
years for all five town council
seats and clerk- treasurer.
Greentown has 5 wards and
one council member is chosen
from each ward. The map of
wards can be seen at the Utility
Office or in next month’s
Grapevine. There are no term
’ limits, however, Jim Harris has
stated that he will not seek re-election.
Candidate Oualifications
All candidates for council
must be a registered voter in the
ward that they seek to
represent. Candidates for clerk-treasurer
must be a registered
voter and reside anywhere
within the town.
GettinP on the Ballot
A candidate may get on the
ballot through one of three
ways.
1. By filing as a candidate of
the Democratic, Libertarian, or
Republican party. Deadline for
filing is noon, August 1,2007.
If there is competition for the
office within the same party,
the party’s candidate is
nominated through a process
called the town convention.
The convention must be held no
later than August 20,2007.
2. By a petition of nomination.
Candidates running as
independent or from minor
parties use this method. The
petition must be filed with the
county voter registration office
by noon, July 2,2007.
3. As a write- in candidate. The
declaration of intent to be a
write- in candidate must be filed
with the circuit court by noon,
July 3,2007.
Town election is November
6,2007 in the City Building. In
order to vote in this election,
persons must live inside town
limits and be registered to vote.
PUBLIC HEARING
ON REZONING
A public’ hearing will be held
Monday, February 12, 2007 at
6: OO p. m. in the Town Meeting
Room to hear a request by
George W. and Sara J. Reed to
rezone property at 9069 E 00
NS. The request is for a parcel
with frontage on St. Rd. 22lU. S.
35 to be rezoned from R- I to
C- I and a parcel extending
south from that parcel, making
an “ L” and fronting on St. Rd.
213 to oe rezoned from R- I to
B- 1. All interested persons will
be given an opportunity to be
heard.
Renovations at EHSC

At the January 9, 2007,
Eastern Howard School Board
meeting, several renovation
projects were listed. Estimates
of the four maintenance items
were given by Rick Rambo,
MSKTD Architect. The board
approved advertising for bids
for the work. The projects and
estimated costs follow:
1) Pool $ 11,564. The major
structural beams are rusting. A
concrete footer will be
installed. There will be re-tiling
and painting work as
well.
2) Auxiliary Gym $ 59,339.
This will involve roof repair.
There is a leak on the north
inside wall. This is the cause
of brick damage as well.
3) Loading Dock $ 130,000.
The loading dock has not been
updated since construction of
the original building. The dock
will be completely replaced
and enlarged. The cost of this
includes resurfacing the
delivery area.
4) Parking Lot, curbs,
sidewalks $ 190,000. There is a
drainage problem on the main
parking lot. The plan is to
connect with the existing
storm drain system. Upgrade
of the parking lot is a major
project. The initial work will
concentrate on the sidewalks
and curbs ($ 10,000 and
$ 8,870). The board anticipates
that the first three projects will
be completed in th‘ e spring and
summer of 2007. Work on the
parking lot will be determined
by the budget.
Other items of business
included reports from the
elementary and middle school
principals, update on the EHS
Credit Revision ( which if
approved will affect the class
of 2010 and all following
classes), several committee
reports, and approval of the
2007- 2008 school calendar.

Jan. 3 1. The online competition consisted of three rounds; team, experiment, and
individual. Each round had a 30 minute time limit, with a total of 100 points possible.
The team earned 75.5 points, placing 1 lth in Class 1. The team was coached by Ms.
Rebecca Strycker and Mr. Monty Maggart.
