Salvo’s Opening Soon
Serving Italian Cuisine
Greentown will soon have a
new Italian restaurant, Salvo’s
Ristorante Jtaliano. The former
Bogie’s Lighthouse on the NW
corner of the intersection of
Main and Meridian Streets is
under new management. Salvo
Bruno and his wife, Amanda,
are re- opening the restaurant
after some redecorating.
Amanda is a graduate of
Eastern High School, the
former Amanda Tracey.
Salvo learned to cook in Italy
from his grandmothers and
worked in family- owned
restaurants in that country. He
has a passion for cooking and
also talks passionately about
Greentown. He considers this
his hometown now. He and
Amanda hope to soon be
homeowners in Greentown.
The restaurant features
homemade pastas including
ravioli, lasagna, and gnocchi, as
well as home- made desserts.
The menu will include dishes
from both northern and
southern Italy. Amanda’s
mother, Carol, is the baker and
1- -
soup- maker. Patrons will be
treated to fresh bread upon
being seated. Salvo graduated
from a conservatory of music in
Sicily and will occasionally
treat patrons to Italian songs
accompanied by guitar.
The building was the
Greentown Post Office in the
1890’ s. It was damaged by fire
in 1922 or 1923 and the second
story was not rebuilt. It has
been a drug store with a cafk in
the west section. It has housed
restaurants by the names of
Malottchi’s, The Glass House,
Cup- A- Day, and most recently,
Bogie’s Lighthouse.
At one time a hand operated
public pump, referred to as “ the
town pump” was in the street
just off the sidewalk at the
corner. - It was a popular
meeting place.
Hours of Salvo’s will be
. Monday through Friday, 1 1 to 2
and 5 to 10. Saturday hours are
5 p. m.- 1 1p. m. The restaurant
will be closed on Sundays.
Catering and banquet services
are also available. Salvo and Amanda Bruno

The Greentown Water
Department will be flushing
hydrants the first week of
April, aeather permitting.
Hydrants are flushed to
ensure all valves are

deposits will backwash into
the water system during
the flushing period.
Customers may want to
keep a bottle of water in
the refrigerator for drinking
and cooking, however the
water is safe to drink and
use. Also, it would be
good to check for

Just when we got used to the
idea of being a state which
observes Daylight Saving time,
the date at which it begins
changed. Instead of the first
Sunday in April, as it has been,
Daylight Saving will begin at
2: OO a. m. the second Sunday of
March. This is by, federal law.
It is part of the Energy Policy
Act of 2005. The idea of
Daylight Saving being an
energy issue is based on the
assumption that people use the
most electricity in the evening
after work. By giving an
additional hour of daylight in
the evening, lights may not be
turned on so soon. This
includes lighting for evening
sports.
On the subject of time, since
Indiana is not all on the same
time zone, it can be confusing
when traveling throughout the
state. To see what time it is in

Navy Plane Accident of I943
Tom Howell took this photo
in March 1943 on road 850 E
about ! h mile north of
Greentqwn. He was seventeen
years old at the time. A Navy
trainer plane had landed in the
field on the east side of the
road. Tom guesses the reason
may have been running out of
fuel. The plane attempted a
takeoff heading south from the
corner of 100 N and 850 E but
hit a post, which resulted in the
plane being in the position seen
in the photo. The wing hit the
top of the car of Ora and
Maggie Hunsinger.
The current Grisssom Air
Reserve Base was opened in
July 1942 by the US. Navy. It
was named Bunker Hill Naval
Air Station and served as a
training base for naval pilots.
According to the Grissom Air
Museum, thousands of pilots
were trained for the Nay.
Marines, and Coast Guard.
