Birthday of Former Movie Star to Be Marked with
Release of Balloons
Miriam Seegar, who was
born in Greentown Sept. 1,
1907, will be celebrating her
looth birthday in her home in
California. She made over 16
movies from 1928 to 1932.
She is’ one of the Seegar
Sisters being featured in ’ an
exhibit in the Greentown
History Center, 103 E. Main
St., Greentown.
In observation of her
birthday, the Greentown
Historical Society is planning
a presentation of the play,
“ The S e e g a r S i s t e r s
Reunion- I94 1 ”, dancing by
the Nixon Sisters, The Golding
Girls, and The Dancing
Deyoes. Also featured will be
vocalists Amanda Kasem and
Alex Dobbert, students of
Susan Brooks, singing songs
connected to the Seegars.
One hundred balloons will
be released in honor of
Miriam’s one hundred years.
The balloons will be released
by students of Eastern
Elementary art teacher, Susan
Coghill.
The festivities will begin at
2: OO p. m. Sat., September I .

Audrey, Emma, and Olivia Nixon danced and sang “ Ja- Da” with the twist of adding a reference
to the Apperson Jack Rabbit car. The entertainment was part of the Grand Opening of the exhibit
in the Greentown History Center, “ The Seegar Sisters, from Greentown to Stage and Screen”. The
Jack Rabbit . was courtesy of Bob and Rosalie Gollner. Frank Seegar, father of the Seegar sisters,
owned a Jack Rabbit.

Author to Speak at History Center
David L. Smith, author of
Hoosiers in Hollvwood will
speak and have a book signing
at the Greentown History
Center, 103 E. Main Street,
Greentown, Indiana, at 2: OO
p. m. on Sunday, August ! 2.
Smith’s book of nearly 600
pages, is a history of the
contributions Hoosiers have
made to the art of motioil
pictures from the beginning of
film’to the present. The book
was published by Indiana
Historical Society Press in
April, 2006.
Smith is a graduate of Arsenal
Technical High School in
Indianapolis, where he has been
named a “ distinguished
graduate”. He received a B. S.
from Indiana University as an
English major with a minor in
Speech/ Theater and the Master
of Arts for Teachers degree,
also from IU, in Speech and
Theater. He has done further
course work at Ball State and
Indiana University. He worked
in television and radio from
1951 to 1975, during which
time he wrote and produced
many s p e c i a l s and
documentaries. He created,
researched, wrote and hosted
the weekly series, “ When
Movies Were Movies”. He
taught Telecommunications at
Ball Statc University, where he
is presently a Professor
Emeritus.
This free presentation
coincides with an exhibit at the
Greentown History Center,
-‘ The Seeg- ar Sisters, from
Greentown to Stage and
Screen”. Two of the Seegars,
Miriam and Sara, made several
movies as well as acting on
stage. Another sister, Dorothy,
was in light opera and toured
with the Redpath Chautauqua
Bureau. Sara was also on radio
in “ The Aldrich Family” in
which her husband, Ezra Stone,
played Henry Aldrich. Sara
also appeared in several
television shows including
“ Dennis the Menace”, “ The
Andy G r i f f i t h Show”
“ Bewitch e d” and “ The
Jeffersons”.
Attendees on August 12 will
also be treated to some songs
relating to the Seegars, sung by
Amanda Kasem and Alex
Dobbert, students of Susan
Brooks.
Provided with support from the
Tippecanoe Arts Federation, the
Indiana Arts Commission, a state
agency, the National Endowment
for the Arts, a federal agency, and
Eli Lily and Company.
Community Fest to Be Aug. I I
The Greentown Community
Fest will be August 11, 9 a, m.
to 5 p. m. on North and South
Meridian Street. In case of
rain, it will be held in the Lions
Pavilion at the fairgrounds.
A new feature is a cake
baking contest. There will be 2
categories for adults, Basic
Cakes, which will be judged on
appearance, texture and taste;
and Decorative Cakes, which
will be judged on appearance
only. Decorative cakes must be
made of real cake and not
Styrofoam. There will be a
basic cake category for kids 12
and under. There is no limit on
the number. of entries per
person. The entry fee is $ 5.00
per cake: Each cake must be
accompanied with an entry
form. The deadline had been
extended to the day - of the
contest.
Cash prizes will be awarded
for lSt, 2nd, and 3“‘ places from
the entry fees. A day in the
shop with the Pastry Diva will
also be awarded to the 1 place
