Volume 14, Issue 10 *‘ A Paper for the People” October 2007 A restoration ceremony was held at Lindley Cemetery September 22. Following vandalism to 94 stones at the cemetery, Liberty Township Trustee, Linda Grove initiated a restoration process. Volunteers spent five weekends cleaning and r e s e t t i n g s t o n e s . Professional cemetery restorationists Joan Wray and David Cox taught the correct way to deal with stones. Rita Kingseed organized lunch for the workers, provided by the American Legion Auxiliary Post 317. The cemetery has received volunteer help the past 4 years from high school students and adults through the United Way Day of Caring. Ken Grove has put in many hours clearing fence rows. The ceremony, conducted by Orlando A. Somers Camp # 1, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Kokomo, honored the memory of “ those who have gone before us” and the volunteers who helped restore the cemetery. Participants were Co. D, 27” IN Inf. 31d District Sons of Veterans Reserve, Kokomo; Lowell E. Symons American Legion Post 317, Greentown; Jon Ayers, Orlando A. Somers Camp # 1, SUV; Mike Lucke, Adjutant Legion Post 3 17; Pastor Michael Waitt, Greentown Family Christian Center, Teresa Ebert, Linda Grove, Barbara Kingseed, Auxiliary of American Legion Post 3 17, Matt Elkin, Commander Orlando A. Somers Camp # l; Barbara Stone, President, Dept. Of IN Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War; Lee Ann Teller, President, Marinda B. Dye Tent # 17, Kokomo DUV. Placing roses to honor their ancestors were Colleen Ladd, Kathryn Day, Bob Ladd, and Bonnie Lindley Butler. A flag and flag pole has been donated by local organizations and the Lindley family . In conjunction with the restoration, the SUV replaced five stones of Civil War veterans. Those were Jehu Gellion, Jordan C. Miller, William R. Lindley, Hugh H. Willits, and John A. Lindley. Photo by Rachel Jenkins This sign denotes Lindley Cemetery as a Historic Cemetery listed in Indiana’s Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. It was placed by the Indiana Historical Bureau and the Liberty Township Trustee. TRICK OR TREAT HOURS Greentown Marshal, Jeff Bennett, suggests the date 1 and time for Trick or Treat in Greentown as Wednesday, October 31, 6: OO to 8: OO p. m. Grant Street Project Nearing Completion Photo by Rachel Jenkins The Grant Street project is slated for completion by the end of the first week in October. It has involved curbs, gutters, and sidewalks on Grant Street from Mill Street to Maple Street, including moving- gas and water lines. That part of Grant Street had never had sidewalks. The construction costs were estimated at $ 645,000.00 with 80% coming from the federal government and the remainder from the town budget.
