Packages Sent to Area Troops
On Wednesday, November 21, the
Greentown Post Office was an exceptionally
busy place to be. Cathy Hill & Pam Barnett
helped Denise Young of the North Central
Indiana Blue Star Mothers send out the first
shipment of packages to our troops. Just two
hours later the three women repacked two
large boxes containing items for the holidays
going to 19 individuals in a single troop.
Also 14 smaller boxes were shipped and are
on their way to specific individuals from the
local surrounding areas.
This has been a month long project for the
newly formed Blue Star Mothers with the
help of the American Legion Post # 317 as
well as the Greentown Post Office.
Donations were also made by many local
area churches as well as businesses and
individuals. The goal is to continue this
effort until our troops come home. After the
first of the year the group will be making
mother shipment. There will soon be a list
posted and a donation box located in the Post
Office to help collect necessary items.
. The Blue Star Mothers welcome any names
to add to the list for future care packages.

Scout ComDletes Eagle Proi ect Through Collaboration I

School student, chose an Eagle
Scout project which would
benefit the Howard County
Historical Society’s Seiberling
Mansion. He was aware that
the mansion is on the National
Register of Historic Places and
“ figured it would be a good

idea to see what he could do to
help maintain such an
important building.”
He approached the curator of
the museum, Stew Lauterbach,
and asked if there was anything
at the mansion that needed to be
fixed. Stew told him about a
side door which had received

significant water damage in the
past, both at the top and the
bottom. The door is not in
service now and has a
protective roof to inhibit future
weather damage. Peter told Bill
Scheibelhut, the Eagle
Coordinator of his troop, # 506,
about the proposed project. Mr.
Scheibelhut said it sounded like
a good idea.
Stew contacted Hayes
Brothers, who have done
several restoration projects at
the Seiberling mansion. Hayes
employees Mark Jenkins and
Herschel Conyers removed the
door. At that point, Mark
( formerly of Greentown) asked
about where the restoration
work was going io be done.
When he perceived that the
Hayes Brothers facility and
personnel would be of a benefit,
he checked with Larry Hayes
about Peter using the company
xorkshop for the project and
got a prompt OK.
Peter had help in various
ways from several scouts and
adults in his troop, Stew
Lauterbach, curator, and Bill
Baldwin, caretaker at the
museum. Peter says that
without Hayes Brothers and
Mark Jenkins, in particular, he
doesn’t know how he would
have finished the project. ‘‘ Just
being able to use such a great
facility was a life- saver and
Mark Jenkins was an incredible
help. He was out at the shop
almost every time I was,
offering assistance and
guidance, and all . around
making my life easier. He was
an invaluable asset to my
project.” The project took a
total of about 60 man hours.
Peter stripped, sanded, stained,
and finished the door. It was
re- installed November 20.
Peter says he learned time
management , and t h e
management of other people
through this project. And in
particular, he learned about
refinishing wood.
New
Superintendent -
Hired for
Dr. Tracy Caddell
The EaFtern Howard School
Corp. Board has selected Tracy
Caddell as t h e new
superintendent o f t h e
corporation. He will replace
Dr. Stephen Healy, who will
retire December 31. ( See
article on page 9 about Dr.
Healy’s retirement.) Dr.
Caddell is c u r r e n t l y
superintendent of the
Switzerland County Schools in
Vevay, Indiana. He’s been
superintendent at that school
since July 2001.
Caddell earned his bachelor’s
Jegree from Indiana University-
Purdue University- Fort Wayne.
He earned master’s degrees
from Indiana University- South
Bend and Ball State University.
He earned his superintendent’s
certification and doctorate from
Ball State University. In
a d d i t i o n t o b e i n g
superintendent, he has been a
high school social studies
teacher and assistant principal.
He grew up in Switzerland
County. While at Switzerland
Schools, he lived during the
week at a family farm, coming
back to his Fishers home on the
weekends. He states that he
will be happy to be able to go
home each evening while at
Eastern. His wife, Teresa,
works for Ball State University.
He likes rural areas and,
knowing of Eastern’s good
reputation for academics, was
pleased to see the opening for
the position and readily applied.
