Shelter from the Storm Over a year ago the First Baptist Church, 224 E. Main St., Greentown,- offered their basement as a shelter if needed. The facility was utilized the evening of March 20 following a wide- spread power , outage in much of Howard County. A particularly heavy snow on the evening of March 19 along with high winds " put out the lights" around midnight. Robert Norris of PSI Energy reports that the sub station on Maple Street ( SR 213) was down, causing loss of power to 3,200 customers. A portable sub station was brought in and power was restored to all but about 800 within a few hours. The portable sub station was still being used on March 22 while the facility was being Logo Design Sought To Honor 150 Years - of Greentown History Here is your chance to go down in history while helping with a celebration of Greentown's history. The Greentown SesquicentennhlCommitteek offering a contest that will establish an official logo, seal, or insignia for the Greentown Sesquicentennial, which will be observed June 11- 14,1998. The logo will be used on publicity and on souvenirs, such as coins, plates, clothing, etc. GREENTOWN SESQUICENTENNIAL LCZO CONTEST 1. The contest is open to anyone. 2. There is no limit to the number of entries one person can make. 3. The logo must contain the words " Creentown, Indiana" and the years 1848- 1998. It may also include other words such as " sesquicentennial '' and " 150 years ", and graphics. 4. The only colors to be used are green, black and white. 5. All entries mast be submitted in black and white with color placement indicated on a second copy. Size of paper must be 8" x 10" or 9" x 12". 6. AI1 entries become the property of the Creentown Sesquicentennial , Committee once they are submitted. 7. The decision of the judges will be final. 8. The contestants will relinquish all ownership rights whatsoever to their entry once it is submitted for judging. ' 9. There will be no mnetary compensation - just the honor! 10. Entries are to be sent to Creentown Sesquicentennial Committee, PO Box 313, Greentown, IN 46936. Name, address, and phone number of contestant must be included. 11. Deadline for receipt of entlsies is July 1,1996. No entries will be accepted after that date. Recommendations: The design should be simple to allow for reproduction in various sizes. The design might tell a historic story and depict progress. Note: The history of Liberty, Jackson and Union Twps. will be part of the event, as well as the town of Creentown. repaired. Late afternoon of the 20th, when the need was known, the Eastern Howard Emergency Service and the Church decided to open the shelter. The EHES provided cots, blankets, pillows and sheets. The Church provided food ( courtesy of The Pizza Place) and supervisory assistance. The availability of the shelter was made known by means of the radio stations WWK'L 1 Elections to Be and WZWZ. Seven persons took advantage of the shelter. The storm ( which arrived on the first day of Spring) made road travel quite difficult and closed or delayed schools. Strong winds again caused power outages in the area the night of March 24, delaying school two hours. Tuesday May 7 Voters in the Primary Elections in Eastern School District will also have the opportunity to elect three School Board members. Hours and locations of the polls will be listed in the next Grapevine, which will be published April 30.
