Mary "Mamie" Schenbeck was well noted as a personal friend of Jeannette Porter and her mother. Mamie gave a presentation to the Adams Historical Society which included history around Geneva; Charles Porter and his business interests; various people...

Often on Sundays the Porters would go to the Hawbaker farm where they would fish along the Wabash River. This photograph kept alive the memory of Charles Porter catching an eel on his hook.

In reading the article written for the Audubon Society, Mamie reminisced of her involvement with the Porters. Included in this was a reference to the vulture nest. She told of ". . .a wild grape vine that grew up the trunk of that tree, and Mrs....

Compare this photograph with 20092061-large, entitled, Fishing for minnows. The photographs may have been taken the same day. Gene loved the out of doors and would often talk of the beauty of snaky rail fences.
At one time this was a working well. Located on the northeast corner of the lot with a sidewalk running nearby, it was a convenient spot to post the cost of admission. Gyp, the Price family dog is not in danger of drowning. This photograph was...
Since Gene dressed her pet blue jay, Hezekiah, it appeared that she allowed Jeannette to dress the golden eagle and heron. The heavy drape to the back of the birds normally covered the entrance to the conservatory. The customary century plant is...

This photograph has created a great deal of interest. Not for the danger of tipping the chair, but because of the mounted deer head. It seems incongruous that a man who refused to allow guns on his 240 acre farm, would have a mounted head in his...
During her lifetime, only best friends or those with a wounded bird or unusual specimen of nature were truly welcomed at the cabin. Being a busy author, researching, doing her camera work in the field, writing, then working on proofs drained...
This photograph shows not only the living room, but the Porter telephone and proud Geneva school pendant. Some believe that Gene's name was shortened from Geneva to avoid confusion with the town. This was not the case, however. Jeannette...

This view shows the conservatory window quite well. The well is located to the left of the cabin, and the carriage house to the far right. Randy Lehman, Limberlost State Historic Site Manager, tells us that an alley ran between the fence posts...

The next photograph will show the cupboard above this, the largest fireplace. You may notice that the bird, though stuffed, moves around. This wicker chair is the same as seen in Jeannette's treasures. Both items are on display at the Limberlost...
The girls are posed in front of the living room fireplace. In an effort to identify the young ladies, we find that in July and August of 1900, cousin Gladys Wilson stayed with the Porters for a number of weeks. The girls would have been 12 and 13...
