Central Glass Company, a manufacturer of glass bottles, was founded shortly after the discovery of gas in Summitville in 1887. It became the Model Glass Works and was still producing in 1914.
Many glass factories located in Madison County during the Gas Boom Era (1887-1915); most left quickly. The Penn-American Plate Glass Company in Alexandria was one of the longer-lived businesses. In 1912, it employeed 470 workers.
