Sep 13 1915 The October number of THE WRITER will be a Riley Appreciation Number, containing brief appreciations of Mr. Riley by the leading American authors. Will you kindly write a paragraph of this kind on this sheet, and mail it as soon as convenient in the envelope enclosed? No poet has ever come so close to the heart of the earth-tiller as Mr. Riley; and we Americans are still a nation of earth-tillers; therefore he is and he is like to remain the best loved of all our poets; a true poet and a true man. Bless him! Alice French (Octave Thanet)
