Description	Gene had written a story and sent it to Metropolitan Magazine. Perriton Maxwell asked that a similar story be written with illustrations for the Christmas issue. This letter arrived with less than 24 hours to meet the deadline. "By four o'clock I was at the schoolhouse, and in the best-lighted room with five or six models, I was working on the spelling bee scenes. By six I was in the darkroom printing-out paper." A series of twelve photographs were sent. Taken from "Novelist and Naturalist", by Long, pg 160-161; and "A little story of the life and work and ideals of 'The Bird Woman.'" by S.F.E.
