Additional information: This building is shown in the 1886 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps but it was probably built several years before that. It was for several years the Anger Plumbing Co. but in the early 1920s it was the Antle Ice Cream Store. In 1925 Frank Schnaitter gave up the building across the street at 231 West Main St. About two years later he equipped the back part of the building for wholesale ice cream production. He maintained the confectionery in the front part of the building and the upstairs was used as a residence for the Schnaitter family. In 1940 Mr. Schnaitter sold the business to his nephew, Virgil Sample, and it was known as the Sample Ice Cream Company until about 1960. At that time the building, along with the Madison Opera House and the old Crozier Building, was torn down to make a parking lot. Sources: Madison Daily Herald; Sanborn Fire Insuran
