Description
This
boat
was
built
in
1910
by
Howard
as the "
J
.
H
.
Menge
" and
later
the "
M
. A.
Burke
" a
cotton
packet
.
It
was
sold
to the
Louisville
and
Cincinnati
Packet
Company
in
1919
and then was
sent
to
Mount
City
for
extensive
alterations
before
being
given
the
name
"
John
W
.
Hubbard.
"
Hubbard
was the
general
manager
of the
company
. The
main
reason
for the
purchase
of the
John
W
.
Hubbard
was that,
after
the
winter
of
1917-1918
when
the "
City
of
Cincinnati
" and "
City
of
Louisville
" were
lost
in the
ice
gorge
, the
company
was
reduced
to
two
small
steamers
. Then they
bought
the "
Queen
City
" and the "
Andes
"
built
from the
ice
damaged
"
Loucinda.
" They also
purchased
the "
M
. A.
Burke
" and
christened
her "
John
W
.
Hubbard.
"
Finally
, they
added
the "
Kentucky
" and
built
the "
Cincinnati.
" At
first
it
seemed
the
company
would
make
a
success
of
it
, but in a
few
years
good
overland
roads
and the
success
of the
railroads
brought
the
hundred
year
old
company
down
. The
Greene
Line
purchased
the "
John
W
.
Hubbard
" but
never
ran
her. She was
beached
at the
upper
end
of
Jeffersonville
.
