Description	This picture gives you an idea of the scope of the incline. In the early days of the railroad, engines were not strong enough or heavy enough to adhere to the tracks. The only means of pulling the train up the incline was horse power. On March 6, 1897, W.F. Guthrie, an "old timer" of the area, related to the Madison Courier, "The cars were drawn up the inclined plane by horse power...the horses (were) hitched, one after the other, and pulling as though they were struggling for life; and men with whips in their hand, cracking them and slashing the horses at a cruel rate. The cars were let down again by brakes."
