Description
The "
Hattie
Brown
" was
built
in
1884
and
made
a
regular
run
from
Warsaw
to
Madison
,
Indiana
and
back
daily
. She was
converted
to an
oil
engine
in
1915
;
two
years
later
she was
lost
in the
terrible
freeze
of
1917-1918
when
the
Ohio
River
froze
for
more
than
seven
weeks
. The "
Hattie
Brown
" was
one
of those
boats
that
endeared
herself
to the
people
who
knew
her. She was an
old
,
reliable
friend
.
During
the
terrible
weeks
of the
above
mentioned
freeze
the "
Hattie
Brown
"
sought
protection
up
the
Licking
River
but was
caught
in the
icy
grip
of the
river
.
When
the
ice
gorge
broke
, she was
swept
away
and was
tossed
on the
rocks
below
Markland
,
Indiana
.
When
the
river
receded
, and for
years
thereafter
, the
remains
of the "
Hattie
Brown
"
could
be
seen
.
It
was a
sad
resting
place
for an
old
friend
. She was
replaced
by the "
Vim
"
which
was at
Madison
when
the
river
froze
. The "
Vim
"
survived
but
never
gained
the
hearts
of the
people
as the "
Hattie
Brown
" had
done
.
