Description	Shown in this picture are Sylvester "Darby" Davis and his wife, Bertha Mae. The river was their home and they loved it and the boats that floated by their front door. Darby and Mae lived in a shanty boat and they were as much a part of Madison, Indiana river life as the wharf boats or the "Trimble" ferry. Darby worked at odd jobs and scavenged the levee. It was said that they sometimes supplemented their income with the sale of bootleg booze. Here you see them smoking their pipes, sitting on a piece of drftwood, letting the folks on the boat admire them.
