Description
The "
Delta
Queen
" and her
sister
ship
"
Delta
King
" were
fabricated
in
Scotland
and
disassembled
for
shipment
to
San
Francisco
. She was then
sent
to
Stockton
,
California
where
she was
reassembled
and
fitted
for
work
in the
Sacramento
area
. In
1941
she was
taken
over
by the
Navy
for
use
in the
Bay
area
. The
Green
Line
bought
her at
public
auction
after
the
war
. She was
taken
through
the
Panama
Canal
and into the
Mississippi
River
,
finally
arriving
at
Cincinnati
and on to
Pittsburg
where
she was
refurbished
and
refitted
. She then
went
into
service
for the
Green
Line
,
mostly
on the
Ohio
and
Mississippi
but on the
other
rivers
, also. In
1970
the "
Delta
Queen
" was
given
an
exemption
from the
more
stringent
regulations
governing
wooden
constructed
boats
by the
U.S
.
Congress
. In
1998
she was,
once
again
,
brought
up
to
date
for
continued
river
use
into the
new
millennium
. The "
Delta
Queen
" has been
designated
a
National
Historic
Landmark
and
is
listed
on the
National
Registry
of
Historic
Places
.
